JERUSALEM: THE BIOGRAPHY

Weidenfeld & Nicolson are delighted to announce that they are to publish the next two major history books by bestselling and award-winning historian Simon Sebag Montefiore. The first is Jerusalem: The Biography - a single volume of narrative, giving an intimate history of Jerusalem through the lives of its kings, conquerors and creators from King David to Ariel Sharon via Macedonians and Persians, Arabs and Ottomans, that will form an exciting and accessible popular history of the Middle East. The second is The Romanovs: The Intimate Chronicles of the Russian Imperial Family, which will tell the story of the dynasty that ruled Russia from 1613, via Peter the Great and Elizaveta, Catherine the Great and Nicholas II to the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917.

Weidenfeld & Nicolson have published Montefiore since 1997. Ion Trewin, his editor at Weidenfeld & Nicolson, says, 'This new and long-term commitment to Simon Sebag Montefiore confirms our belief that he has rapidly become one of the leading historians of his generation.'

Simon Sebag Montefiore says: 'I am thrilled by this new commitment to my books. Jerusalem :The Biography will enable me to research a fresh history of the Middle East over three millennia through the lives of its greatest rulers, not just concentrating on the clash of Christians, Jews and Moslems. I have studied Middle Eastern history all my life but also my family has been involved in the history of Jerusalem since the 19th Century and will feature in the book which adds a personal angle to the project. The Romanovs allows me to return to the Russian archives where I have spent the last ten years researching the worlds of Catherine the Great and Josef Stalin.'

MONSTERS: HISTORY'S MOST EVIL MEN & WOMEN

Simon Sebag Montefiore will, in September 2008, publish his selection of the most despised villains from history Monsters which will form a set with his 101 World Heroes published in 2007, both published by Quercus Books.
"A magnificent biography, a masterpiece of detail, a vivid psychological portrait of this dangerous, enigmatic man."
Michael Binyon, The Times
"Young Stalin is exhilarating. Montefiore has brought together an astonishing array of often new, often first hand sources, handled with a deft combination of scepticism
and selectivity."
Robert Conquest, author
of The Great Terror
"Should the life of the
black-hearted ogre be so entertaining? Stalin the bankrobber resembles James Cagney; Stalin the buccaneer has the panache of Errol Flynn. Shamefully irresistible."
Peter Conrad, The Observer
"Macabrely fascinating, the early chapters (are) worthy of Alexander Dumas. Stalin's womanising (was) priapic.  Riveting if chilling, Stalin's character brilliantly drawn"
Antonia Fraser, Mail on Sunday
"Gripping. Montefiore's research is brilliant. The book provides a wealth of serious and scurrilous detail, creating a memorable portrait of the one of the 20th Century's greatest monsters."
Antony Beevor, Daily Telegraph
"A triumph of research and storytelling, a masterly account of the October Revolution, an outstanding book full of surprises."

Victor Sebestyen, Evening Standard
